The Good, Sad Ending

It was sad. But it was a good kind of sad, the only possible ending that was also another beginning. The kind that makes you feel ancient for its depth and childlike because of how hard you cry.

A truly terrible ending leaves you hopeless. But we still had hope.

Everything had changed. They were gone forever and we would never know for sure if or when they hurt or lived in infinite happiness. That mystery leaves us with hope and pain.

One day, perhaps, we will know for sure.
